O verbo to be significa ser e estar em português. Vamos estudar essas formas no presente simples (simple present).

Exemplos:

I’m German.
I’m a doctor at Hospital dos Servidores.
She’s a beautiful Chinese girl.
You are in Jane’s car.

Exemplos:

I’m not from Argentina.
I’m not Argentinian.
She isn’t a very famous model in France.
We are not teachers, we are engineers.

Exemplos:

Are you a researcher at Instituto Oswaldo Cruz?
Are they on the second oor?
Is It a good Hotel?

Agora, vejamos o verbo to be no passado simples (simple past).

Exemplos:

She was the best student in class last quarter.
They were in Belo Horizonte last summer.
It was a bad day yesterday.

Exemplos:

I wasn’t tired during the trip.
We were not in Rio in the Carnival.
Maria was not in that hotel.

Exemplos:

Was the car in the garage yesterday?
Were João and Paulo on the beach this morning?
Was the president in Brasília last Sunday?

O verbo there be quer dizer haver, no sentido de existir, em português. There is é usado antes de coisas ou pessoas no singular, já there are é usado antes de coisas ou pessoas no plural.

Exemplos:

There is much sugar on the shelf.
There are many people in the theater.

Exemplos:

Is there a little girl in the room?
Are there trees in the garden?

O verbo “there be” no passado segue a mesma regra do presente.

Exemplos:

There was an orange in the box.
There were many students in class yesterday.

Exemplos:

There wasn’t any book on the shelf.
There were some soldiers in the military lodgment.

Exemplos:

Was there a party at Mario’s house last night?
Were there two cars in the garage?
How many cars were there in the garage?
