NEED
Indica necessidade.
Exemplos:
Paulo needs to take some vitamine C. (Paulo precisa tomar vitamina C.)
She does not need to work. She has much money. (Ela não precisa trabalhar porque tem muito dinheiro.)
SHOULD
Indica recomendação/conselho, suposição/expectativa/probabilidade.
Exemplos:
You should read Machado de Assis. (Você deveria/deve ler Machado de Assis.)
She should not (shouldn ́t) wake up late. (Ela não deveria acordar tarde.)
MUST
• MUST: certainty – certeza.
Exemplo:
That must be Carlos. They said he was tall with blue eyes.
That must have been the hospital. There are no other hospital around.
• MUST NOT: prohibition – proibição.
Exemplo:
You must not swim in that pool. You are not a guess of the hotel.
You must not forget to pay your bills while you are in your trip to Bahamas.
• MUST: strong recommendation – forte recomendação.
Exemplo:
You must take some time off and get some rest.
You mustn’t drink so much. It’s not good for your health.
• MUST: necessity. Pode-se usar have to e need.
Exemplo:
You must have a permit to enter the National Park.
You don’t need to take a car to come to my house.
We must get a permit to enter the park next week.
We don’t have to get a permit to enter the National Park. (don’t have to = não é necessário)
SHOULD
• recommendation advisability – recomendação/conselho.
Pode-se usar ought to ou had better.
Exemplo:
Patrick is with high cholesterol, he should eat low fat foods.
You really should start eating fruits.
Chris shouldn’t smoke so much. It’s not good for her health.
• assumption/expectation/probability –
suposição/expectativa/probabilidade.
Exemplo:
Pode-se usar ought to, be supposed to.
Nancy should be in São Paulo by now.
Nancy should be in São Paulo by next week.
Nancy shouldn’t be in São Paulo yet.
