Hubby tosses lottery ticket worth $5 Million in the trash – But wife finds it in nick of time

“It was the first ticket either my husband Dan and I had ever bought”, said a thrilled 22-year-old Carol, who purchased a single $2 ticket that was good for the Wisconsin lottery drawings on Wednesday and Saturday, September 27 and 30.

But after the first drawing Dan, 26, didn’t realize they had another shot and threw out the ticket. Carol didn’t retrieve it because she figured out the odds of winning were millions to 1.

“I forgot it until Monday when I turned on the morning news and heard the six winning numbers”, she said. “I knew I’d picked three for sure and I started to get excited. Then a chill ran down my spine. ‘Dan may have thrown out $5 million’, I thought with horror.

With my heart pounding, I raced to the garage, frantically emptied the garbage bags and began to dig through the soggy mess of coffee grounds, eggshells and leftover food- praying Dan didn’t tear up the ticket.

I had been picking through the stuff for about 15 minutes when I spotted a corner of the ticket under a torn envelope. My heart raced. ‘I got it!’, I shouted. Then I pulled the ticket out and jumped for joy when I saw it was in one piece.

When officials checked our ticket and said ‘You’re millionaires’, Dan and I looked at each other with eyes as big as silver dollars. We were so excited neither of us could talk.”

With their winnings, the couple plan to buy Carol a new car and pay off their modest three-bedroom home. But both are determined to keep a normal life – and continue working.

Said Dan, “We’re going to try to keep our life the same as it was before.”

English sculptor Anish Kapoor, one of the greatest active artists in our time, was born in India in 1954. Having built an impressive oeuvre over the past three decades, today Kapoor stands out as a sculptor in the strictest sense of the word: he has introduced sculpture in a new aesthetic and technical scale by incorporating techniques – appropriated from architecture, aeronautics, and the heavy industry – to the support.

Anish Kapoor’s forms and sculptures are apparently deceiving. They seem quite simple in terms of form, yet they convey, each of them, a dizzying complexity of natural elements, technique, aesthetic and finishing. Brazilian poet Antonio Cicero once told me that finishing accounts for 50% of a poetic creation. I have become deeply aware of this fact. In Kapoor’s work, it accounts for even more. For example, When I am Pregnant, is a work shrouded by a thin and fastidiously finished layer of plaster, it is a subtle protuberance on the wall, enunciating a bulging form that in itself heralds creation and the sublime. It is art, wanting to be born.

5. Take into account statements I to IV. Pick the alternative which contains true statements.

I. Anish Kapoor não se dedica muito aos acabamentos de sua obra, embora ele seja um artista muito ativo.
II. Há no trabalho de Kapoor uma incorporação de técnicas provenientes até mesmo da indústria pesada.
III. A opinião de Antonio Cicero modificou profundamente a percepção artística do autor do texto.
IV. A verdadeira arte de Kapoor ainda está por nascer.

a) I and II

b) II and III

c) II and IV

d) III and IV

d) I and IV

6. The question which cannot be answered accordingly to the information provided in the text is:

a) How did the author awaken to the importance of art creation finishing?

b) What is the most famous Kapoor’s creation?

c) What can one notice behind the appearance in Kapoor’s work?

d) What is the nature of the elements present in Kapoor’s work?

e) What define the creation and the sublime in the work exemplified in the text?

7. From the content of the text, one can infer that the best synonym for the adjective “fastidiously” is:

a) Meticulously, carefully taken care of in every detail

b) Freely, in a way that is not controlled or limited

c) Disinterestedly, not influenced by personal opinions

d) Vehemently, showing very strong feelings

e) Impulsively, done without careful thought.

NSPCC – A cry for children

This is Michael’s story. “It would start with a smack. But then there was no stopping him.

He’d lay into me like I was his worst enemy. It was as if he forgot who I was. But he’d usually remember to hit me where it wouldn’t show. When he didn’t, I’d be kept off school. If a teacher asked me about a cut or a bruise, I’d just lie.

Once he broke my arm. Mum told the hospital I’d had an accident. Finally, a neighbor saw my bruised face, and reported it.

I will always be grateful to my counselor. He said I wasn’t to blame. He helped me to feel better about myself. He was the father I never had.” There are thousands of cases similar to Michael’s each year, from every level of society. But they are only the tip of the iceberg. Thousands more children are the victims of less obvious forms of cruelty.

Some people wouldn’t even think of these as abuse. But imagine being constantly shouted at. Or ignored as if you don’t exist. Or criticized for everything you do.

The emotional effects can be just as painful as those caused by more obvious forms of abuse including low self-worth, humiliation, loneliness, depression and an inability to relate to others. Some children have even been driven to kill themselves.

Because of this, the NSPCC has launched a campaign called “A cry for children”. It’s a cry to everyone to stop and think about the way they behave towards children.

If you or someone you know is suffering from abuse, please call the NSPCC Child Protection Helpline on 0800 800 500 any time, day or night. Or if, after reading this, you would find more information helpful, please call us on 0171 825 2775.

d) One should always respect one’s father, no matter how aggressive his behavior is.

10. Which alternative did not occur in Michael’s Story?

a) Michael was blamed for having accidents and had to lie down at home.

b) If Michael had cuts or bruises which could easily be seen, then Michael would be kept at home.
